Marking Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the biggest-ever Commonwealth heritage project was recently announced at the HQ of the Barbados National Trust as part of a Conference of the Islands.
The five year Commonwealth Heritage Skills project will build heritage skills with up to twenty practical projects on buildings and sites across the Commonwealth. Regional partners include the Commonwealth Heritage Forum, the Caribbean Heritage Network and the University of the West Indies.
The project will provide a tiered training programme for young people in all levels of heritage conservation through short and long term courses
both in the UK and in different Commonwealth regions coupled with practical work at buildings and sites at risk across the Commonwealth.
Organised by the Commonwealth Heritage Forum and funded by the UK High Commission in Barbados, the conference aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the shared needs and opportunities for the heritage of the Caribbean.
The conference brought together regional partners including the Caribbean Heritage Network, the University of the West Indies and Tulane University to provide a platform for local stakeholders and heritage experts to identify priorities for the heritage of the whole region.
